From IndieWire.com
August 26, 2010

The Martha’s Vineyard International Film Festival will give its its first-ever Global Citizen award to actor Matthew Modine (“Full Metal Jacket,” Showtime’s “Weeds”) for his decades-long commitment to environmental activism. Modine will be honored at a ceremony September 11 in Vineyard Haven, Mass., following a screening of his new film “The Trial.” Modine is the founder of Bicycle For a Day, whose mission is to encourage bicycling as a major mode of transportation in America. He also recently launched Do-One, which he describes as “the ‘Smokey the Bear’ campaign for the environmental movement.” “He’s not only had a distinguished artistic career,” said Richard Paradise, founder and director of the Martha’s Vineyard festival, in a statement, “but has put as much energy and passion into his human rights and environmental activism. He truly is a model Global Citizen.”
